Greetings everyone;
I had one of the best South Pacific DU openings in many years this
morning 10/26. I have not seen an opening like this since the heyday of
the 80s when DUs were were all over the dial on a nightly basis. 5 KW
Aussies were everywhere. Unbelieveable conditions. I even bagged a
couple new ones which is hard to do with about 350 Aussies and Zedders I
have heard and QSL'd through the years. Hopefully tonight will be as
good.
The Hawaiians and South Pacific DX started showing up around 0530 UTC
where Tahiti was holding its own next to KCBS very nicely. The S-Meter
readings were about equal at S9+30 DB. Tonga-1017 was a bit weaker but
easily readable with a woman in Tongan. Hawaiians were dominating the
frequencies like KSSK-590 and KUAI-720. By 0700 I found a very very
strong signal from Samoa-540 dominating the frequency at S9+20-25 DB! A
gal with a British accent playing older US pop tunes and IDs as "SBS"
(Samoan Broadcasting System). I just could not get over the signal. I
just leaned back and listened to 2AP on 540 for at least a half an hour.
I did not want to change the frequency! I have heard them as strong in
the past but it has been a number of years. Anyway by 0730 UTC I was
finding hets everywhere. The first to show up after the South Pacific
and Hawaiians were the New Zealanders. They are generally ahead of
Australia as it gets dark there a bit earlier. Stations like 2YA-567
were quite listenable. By 0800+ the Aussies started showing up and they
were all over. The Eastern Australians were quite good especially below
1300. I did not hear much above 1300 except for 1503 and 1548. On to
the log.
531 NEW ZEALAND, Auckland, 1XPI, a beautiful signal with Island and
older US pops and a woman ancr in Samoan (sounded like) Noted at 0630

540 AUSTRALIA, Longreach 4QL fair u/o 2AP with ABC News at 1100

540 SAMOA, Apia 2AP, unbelieveable signal at S9+20 DB+ with older US
pop music and some Samoan pops. Songs like "Faith" by George Michael".
then at 0730 a Samoan version of The Tennessee Waltz. The song made
famous by Patti Page in the 50s in the US. Many IDs as "SBS" (Samoan
Broadcasting Service) and time checks, plus some dedications 10/26.
Really an exciting station is listen to. It was fun. Later heard on
late after 1100+ with soccer in Samoan and EE. (PM-OR)

550 HAWAII, Wailuku KMVI, very strong and totally dominating 550

558 UNID, strange but this channel did not reveal any decent audio
everytime I tried. Fiji normally is good when cx are half this good.
Maybe Fiji was off? No 4AM either. Tried off and on from before 0700 to

567 AUSTRALIA, Julia Creek 4JK mixing with 2YA with ABC News at

567 NEW ZEALAND, Wellington 2YA, very good with older US pop tunes

570 HAWAII, Lihue KQNG. Totally dominating 570 with Hawaiian
football gave at 0640 10/26, local and Honolulu spots. Over KLAC. No

576 AUSTRALIA, Sydney 2RN, Classical mx and female ancr at 1030 UTC

576 NEW ZEALAND, Hamilton 1XLR, good at 0740 10/26 with choral
Christian music (Southern Star). They get out well for only 2 KW.

signals, but strange as I would hear Australia and New Zealand here on

everything else with pops and IDs "Playing the music of yesterday and

did not notice them until the ABC News at 1100 10/26 and they were
rather weak. Odd how some frequencies were totally alive and others were

Maybe Ruai Mai Auckland? When I would phase KLOK, this station was still
there but too weak to copy. The Cumbia music KLOK-San Jose CA changed to

1206 AUSTRALIA, Canberra 2CC, good on top for a bit at 0959.30 UTC
10/26 with spot for water system and info on on City Council meeting,
followed by "right here on 2 Double C'. I am really pleased with this as
I used to get 2GF all of the time in the past when 1206 was in. New!

Only a couple new ones, but still the best DU morning I have seen in
probably 10 years or more.
