Hmmm, I just had to comment on this great memory for me.
In 1965 I spent some months at the Goethe-Institut in Germany
(language school), living in a small town near Munich, and many
nights we (students from many countries) would gather in the
lounge and often listened to "208 your station of the stars"
which was on 208 m., then 1439 kHz. when we got tired of
trying to decipher Bayerischer Rundfunk (think it was on 800).

For those of us who were English speakers, that, and AFN
from Germany were about all there was to hear on AM in English.

I heard 1439 a few times from Long Island in the 70's, and
even after it went to 1440 in 1978 and dropped the English
pop mx. I remember being in London and Amsterdam and
hearing some of the pirates during the day, 1985, the best was
Radio London on I think 1143 from a ship near Frinton-on-Sea,
Essex. That was indeed a special time for radio
