IBOC Bandscan: One Mile from Transmitter Site

Sunday, February 15 2004

I did a bandscan of the 800-900 region of the AM dial at a spot in Richmond
Heights, MO, one mile from the KFUO 850 transmitter site on the grounds of
Concordia Seminary in Clayton, MO. Here's how the band looked with IBOC
(using a
Jensen car radio, with the MFJ-306 shortwave converter turned off):

800 KREI Farmington, MO (moderate IBOC interference from KFUO)
810 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
820 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
830 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
840 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
850 KFUO Clayton, MO (muddy audio, no thanks to IBOC)
860 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
870 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
880 WCBW Highland, IL (severe IBOC interference from KFUO)
890 Wiped out by IBOC interference from KFUO
900 KFAL Fulton, MO (severe IBOC interference from KFUO)

Close to the transmitter site, IBOC sidebands on an average car receiver can
waste as much as 100 kHz of spectrum space. This is another reason why the
American broadcast industry MUST give up on IBOC, and search for a separate
band
for digital radio.
