Update From Houston

Tuesday, February 17 2004

Some quick notes from Houston:

There are no TIS stations active at either Hobby Airport or Intercontinental. (There are numerous NOAA weather stations around town but I think almost all of them were previously known to exist).

1510 KROB-TX is supposed to be a daytimer but they're on at night.

1520 WQMA-MS DX test easily logged here from the top of the parking garage here at Anderson Cancer Center.

1560 KILE-TX is supposed to be a daytimer but they have been leaving their transmitter on OC at night. Last night was the first night they turned it off in the 5 nights I've been here (and they had been running programs until about 4 hours after sunset).

1680 At least 2 new stations here. There is an HAR describing the long-term closure of US 59 between TX-288 and the west side of I-610. There is also a NOAA weather relay that I haven't quite pinpointed yet, but I think it's S/SW of Houston and probably well west of Galveston (I was in Galveston yesterday and no trace of it there).

I have what seems to be an XE UNID on 1450 identifying themselves as "94.1 La Candiente(?)" (doesn't quite sound like Candente or Caliente).

I have several more notes and a lot of research to do when I get back. I'm closing in on my 1340 XE UNID from 2002 with laser bursts (there seems to be another 10kW station on 1340 now, per a partial sign-on announcement I dug out from under the Matamoros station). I'm also compiling a list of a few dozen XE anthem times from my UNIDs so we can all chase some of these together.

The DX conditions from the room here at the Anderson Center's Rotary House are actually pretty good... much less attenuation and noise than you usually get in a high-rise hotel. Most nights I head out to the top of the parking garage for a couple of hours to get the best possible conditions.

We get the doctors' treatment plan for my dad at the end of the day today. Thanks everyone for your prayers.

All dates/times mentioned in my reports are Eastern Local Time for US/Canadian stations and GMT for all others.
