I spent 2/18-22 in Palm Desert, CA. What I didn't hear was more interesting
than what I did hear. For instance, KPSI-920 and KNZQ-1140, both Palm
Springs, are barely readable at night in Palm Desert. I always thought of
the valley as an entity and we are talking about single digit mileage
distance between the two so I was amazed. Their night patterns certainly
show deep nulls but it's hard to believe they are that deep. KNWZ-970
Coachella is // 1140 and covers Palm Desert. They are jointly promoted.
550 KFYI had the best signal out of Phoenix. "The Valley's Talk Station."
560 XETE was pretty strong at night when we got there, the night of 2/18,
but was barely readable on the loop during the daytime (KBLU quite dominant)
and did not stand out again at night during other sessions. I have to wonder
if they cut power. The 780 XE was not noted.
610 UNID, Fox Sports Radio. Heard daytime; presumed Lancaster.
670 KLTT CO Commerce City with conservative talk apparently was what I was
hearing during the daytime. KIRN was barely there days but was normally on
top at night.
830 KPLS CA Orange (or whatever the calls might be these days) was the best
LA signal, edging out KFI. SS.
1610 (WCE313) Palm Springs. Listed in the paper along with all the other AM
stations but not heard in Palm Desert. I would have at least heard a BFO in
Palm Desert if it had been on.
I did not take time to identify XEs heard during the daytime on 790 (no KABC
at all) 820 850 940 990 1050 1080 1190 or 1460 (Radio Ranchito) but the
first three certainly seemed to play a lot of US music. SS was also heard on
1520 twice but something made me think it was KMPG the second time (2/22
1640 PST; the first time was at 1130). KVTA is a possibility but (1) I do
not know if it has changed to SS and (2) the way LA stations penetrate the
mountains (poorly) make it unlikely.
I am sure more extensive nighttime DXing would have been rewarding but I
just didn't get there.
