I didn't notice that midday part. You're right that Santa Monica wouldn't carry that far in daytime (though I have listened to KOMO/1000 at noon before). In Manteca, there is someone with one of the flea-powered AM transmitters. It got out to a 4-mile radius. If you find the 1580 signal consistently, take a little ride and see if it is similar in nature.

The Central Valley has great ground conductivity and I've had KUZZ, KFI, XETRA and KNX middays but nothing high band noted previously. I don't think it was an image either, although the Delco does suffer from it when I'm driving in Sacramento. I'll look for it again. I've heard 1580 a couple of times, close to noontime. A weak signal but definitely SS.

I'm not Albert, but 1580/Merced went off in 2004 permanently, like stations who got expanded band assignments were supposed to do. Their 1660 counterpart is alive and kicking (KXOL willing). 1580 is KBLA/Santa Monica.

Albert, is 1580 Merced back on again? I heard SS on 1580 midday the other
day, but never heard an ID. The carrier current from Sac State is another
possibility, but remote as I've never heard it from VV before.
